History of Chiropractic

For centuries, chiropractic served as an unusual cure for various ailments. Around 400 BC, one of the many people who used manual adjustment to treat spinal disorders is Hippocrates, who is “The Father of Greek Medicine”. He once wrote, “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases.”

Also, in 3000 B.C. an Ancient Chinese scroll shows spine adjustments. Around 2000 years ago, the Buddhist artifacts contain manuscripts depicting lumbar spine manipulation.

In the 16th century, manual spine adjustments continued until it reached Europe. The technique had been passed from one generation to another among people who learned the technique in the family. These people are also known as “bone-setters”, who offered spinal adjustments as an alternative medicine for people who do not have sufficient access to a proper medical attention.

The origin of the word

It comes from the Greek word, ‘cheir’ which means ‘hand’ and ‘praktos’ which means ‘done’. Chiropractic translates to “Done by Hand”. The name Chiropractic is a term chosen by its developer, Daniel David Palmer. A prolific reader of scientific things, DD Palmer became curious about spine manipulation and its effect. Despite existing for thousands of years, no one had delved deeper to uncover the scientific rationale that can explain its effects.

Major Contribution to the Field of Medicine

Palmer was devoted to studying the effects of manual spinal manipulation. For years, Palmer extensively studied anatomy and physiology.  He also tried to merge science and metaphysics. This led him to the discovery of chiropractic science, becoming the founder of chiropractic. Many considered Palmer’s research in chiropractic as his major contribution in the field of medicine.

The first successfully performed initial chiropractic adjustment happened in September 1895. Palmer examined a janitor whose name is Harvey Lillard. He was partially deaf 17 years prior after he felt something “crack” in his back when he bent over.  Palmer noticed that Lillard had a vertebra in his upper back that is out of position. Palmer performed a spinal manipulation to correct the position. The next day after the adjustment, the janitor noticed an improvement in his hearing. Lillard even told Palmer, “I can hear that rackets on the streets.”

From that first recorded adjustment, DD Palmer continued to develop chiropractic and in 1897. Palmer established a chiropractic school, “The Palmer School of Cure” which is now known as the Palmer College of Chiropractic, in Davenport, Iowa, where it still stands until today.

Many people became interested in Palmer’s new science and healing art. Among his first graduates were Palmer’s son, Bartlett Joshua (BJ), Andrew P. Davis, Solon M. Langworthy, John Howard, and Shegataro Morikubo, as well as members of the older healing arts of medicine and osteopathy. The first state law licensing chiropractors was passed in 1913, and by 1931, legal recognition had given to 39 states chiropractors.

However, it was not a year later when DD Palmer coined the term chiropractic. He asked a patient and a friend named Reverend Samuel Weed, who helped him name his discovery. Weed suggested combining the words cheiros and praktikos. Palmer began using the word chiropractic after the Greek word which means “done by hand.”

Palmer’s Successor

Many people became interested in Palmer’s newly found natural art of healing. Some members of the traditional healing practices of medicine and osteopathy, and even His son, Bartlett Joshua supported his theory. Bartlett Joshua became the first secretary of the Universal Chiropractor’s Association, and soon also takes over the Palmer School of Chiropractic that his father established. Palmer is the “Founder”, his son B.J. was also recognized by many as the “Developer” of Chiropractic.

Their extensive research and study about the alternative treatment for different disorders made way for recognition to chiropractic treatment. In fact, The US government created state laws for licensing chiropractors.

Recognizing Chiropractic

It was 1913 when Kansas leads the way to help spread the license of chiropractic practices. In just two decades, in 1931, legal recognition for chiropractors was given to 39 states. In 1974, Louisiana was the last state to give license for chiropractic practice.

Expected to Grow

Today, Chiropractic continues to grow. In the United States, there are more than 70,000 active chiropractic licenses. Chiropractic was also officially recognized as a health care profession in the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Chiropractic treatment is seen to grow in countries like Canada, Mexico, Australia, Japan, and Switzerland as well.

Chiropractic schools can also be found different countries around the world. Some of them are in Chile, Australia, New Zealand and even South Africa. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are more than 52,600 chiropractors in the US As of today. It is expected to grow at least 28% between 2010 and 2020.

Chiropractic When Pregnant

Chiropractic is a form of alternative medicine that involves manual therapy specializes in manipulating the spine and related nerves.  It is a combined art and science in adjusting abnormally aligned bones to lessen nerve stress in the spine.  Its main goal is to promoted better health and improved performance.

Chiropractic also allows the body to heal itself naturally. It is apart from other conventional treatment because it emphasizes the conservative management of the neuromusculoskeletal system without using medicines or surgical procedures. Furthermore, Healthcare professionals suggest that chiropractic also has some positive outcomes for pregnant mothers, and universally, it is already accepted safe for all people of any age.

In many cases, during pregnancy, labor, and even after birth, regular chiropractic treatment helped reduce discomfort during pregnancy. Chiropractors also take special courses to treat pregnant women.

Chiropractic care during pregnancy

During pregnancy, there are several physiological and hormonal changes that occur in the body.  It happens in preparation for creating an environment inside the womb to give room for the baby’s development. Unfortunately, the following changes may lead to misaligned spine or joints:

  •    deep back curve
  •    pelvic changes or adjustments
  •    postural changes or adaptations
  •    protruding abdomen  and increased back curve

Many pregnant women chose to have Chiropractic care by regular sessions that can provide benefits to lessen pregnancy discomfort and helps recovery after birth.

Some of the known benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy include:

Reduces back pain associated with pregnancy

The main goal of chiropractic treatment is to align the spine in its optimal position. In order to relieve back pain that is common with pregnancy.  In the third trimester, the baby grows bigger and heavier, the women’s body goes through a lot, particularly in their skeletal structure. As a result, she may develop poor posture. Chiropractic care help can also help to correct the posture, by keeping the spine its anticipated curve.

It eases pregnancy symptoms

Chiropractic treatment is also known to relieve pain, especially for pregnant women. Regular Chiropractic sessions not just lessen the pain but it also eases pregnancy symptoms like nausea and vomiting. In some cases, women reported having fewer morning sickness incidents.

It promotes good health both for the mother and baby

One of the main premises of chiropractic care is to remove all restrictions in the spinal column which allows the body to heal itself. According to experts, the body can function at its best when it can communicate freely with the brain. It can work as designed if there will be no obstructions in the process. Chiropractic treatment during pregnancy helps ensure better health for both mom and the baby. Their immune systems are very intimately connected during pregnancy. It creates a strong bond with her unborn child physically and emotionally.

According to the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association or ICPA, pregnant women should undergo chiropractic care during their pregnancy. They believe that Regular Chiropractic sessions can establish pelvic balance as the baby develops in the mother’s womb.

Good positioning for the baby

Many people also believe that chiropractic treatment can help better positioning of the baby in preparation for birth. A misaligned lower spine or hips may also make it difficult for the baby to get into the best possible position for delivery. It may result in Breech and posterior positions which may interfere with the natural labor and may lead to emergency C-sections. Regular Chiropractic sessions can ensure the pelvis in its optimal position.

According to the study recently published in Journal of Manipulative and Physiological suggest women seek chiropractic treatment throughout her pregnancy to establish pelvic to have easier and safer delivery.

It helps heals the body in postpartum

By correcting any misalignments that happened during labor or birth, chiropractic care can also help in the postpartum healing process. It focuses on the nervous system to ensure that the mother’s body is functioning well so that she can heal naturally after giving birth. Can chiropractic help migraines?

Studies estimate that migraines affect more than 25 million people living in the United States. Migraines affect more boys than girls before puberty and two to three times more women are more prone to suffer from a migraine compared to men. It usually decreases during pregnancy. People suffering migraines usually experience their first headache before the age of 30. Many studies also found that genetics and environment affect the possibility of a person to suffer from migraines.

What are migraines?

According to the US National Institute of Health, around 12 million Americans suffer from migraines. Migraines are moderate to severe throbbing pain sensations on one side of the head. Many migraines commonly start with a tight feeling in the neck and around the temples. Those suffering from the disorder are usually sensitive to light and sound with accompanying nausea and vomiting as well.

What causes migraines?

The leading causes of migraines are unknown. However, they are believed to be related to our lifestyle choices. Many things such as certain food groups, poor eating habits, lack of exercise, and weather can play a part in developing a migraine.  Other triggers include stress, hunger, fatigue, and depression. Some doctors consider a migraine as an indicator of more serious health conditions.

Some studies have found that small misalignment or subluxation in the spine can trigger migraines. However, poor posture can greatly contribute to having the disorder. When the vertebrae are misaligned, it can actually cause the nerves and muscles to become irritated and inflamed. This put a serious strain on the neck and back, thus producing an increase the chance of spine misalignment that can start a migraine.

A migraine most often starts at puberty and is worst during middle age. In some women, they become less common during second and third trimesters of menopause stage as Migraines are more likely to occur during the menstruation.

Migraine Treatment

Recommended Migraine treatment involves medications such as such as ibuprofen and paracetamol for the avoidance of triggers causing headaches and nausea. Sometimes these medications are used to help prevent such occurrence. However, with the emergence of chiropractic therapy, many turned to this alternative cure for a migraine, this treatment does not include drugs or surgical procedures but uses X-rays and physical exams to determine how the patient’s spine might impact the patient’s health. Chiropractors also use devices such as shoe inserts, braces, straps and other helping tools. They can also advise at-home exercises that the patient can do to work on tension and discomfort in the neck and spine.

A recent study in Australia examined chiropractic treatment for different types of headaches, including migraines. The study combined the results of 22 studies, which had a total of more than 2,600 patients. In the end, it concluded that chiropractic treatment may serve as a good preventive treatment for migraines.  In that same study, 79 percent said they had a significant reduction in pain.

According to another study by Duke University, spinal manipulation, or adjustments, are not only great for help to reduce the severity of migraines,  but regular chiropractic care can also result in longer-lasting relief. And can assure fewer side effects than typically prescribed headache medication.

Chiropractors believe that the spine is the epicenter of good health. They manually adjust the spine positions to correct its alignment by Stretching and adjusting the bones, so that joints and body tissues can impact the way blood vessels function, throbbing blood vessels being the physiologic root of a migraine headache. Once chiropractors correct these misalignments, the pain, stiffness, and soreness will disappear.

In a research published recently by Duke University, Chiropractic or spinal manipulation can immediately improve a headache or migraines. It provides a long lasting relief from the disorder and has fewer side effects compared to prescription medication for headaches.

Who should not participate in chiropractic treatment for migraines?

Although relatively safe, it is best to get let your doctors know of any medications and supplements that the patient takes before getting chiropractic treatment. Those who undergo spinal surgery may also need to get approval from their doctor if they want to get chiropractic care for faster recovery. Patients with osteoporosis, nerve damage, numbness, tingling, and loss of strength in an arm or leg are always advised to seek proper medical advice before getting chiropractic treatment.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Athletes

Professional athletes found chiropractic treatment as a non-invasive and drug-free alternative to undo the punishment that their body takes in sports. The main goal is to enhance their performance while decreasing the pain. Strenuous and vigorous exercises became part of training for Athletes, which causes a variety of sports injuries. Treating these said injuries is just one of the many ways that athletes benefit from chiropractic care.

Spinal adjustments combined with chiropractic treatment can help treat sports injuries from sports that have high-impact in the body, having the same amount of strain felt compared to an auto collision.  These sports include football, basketball, and hockey. Chiropractic adjustments can help to treat injuries from these high-impact sports. When the body starts to reduce the inflammation of the nerves, the body also heals naturally which improves performance. Chiropractic care also offers a natural way to prevent many different ailments that often plague athletes.

Most experts strongly recommend seeking chiropractic treatment because it has a lot of beneficial effects for the athletes, here are some of them:

It prevents injury

The most effective way to treat sports-related injuries is to stop them from occurring. Chiropractic care helps achieve proper balance while maintaining musculoskeletal coordination. When the body performs at its best performance it greatly diminishes related to poor function. According to Sports Medicine Guide published by Thomas Harris: “Postural strength and coordination are essential for injury prevention and sports performance.”

In another study at Pollard by Hoskins, chiropractic care helps to add conventional treatment that lowers the risk of strain injuries, knee injuries, and lower back pain. Athletes receiving chiropractic treatment claimed to have an overall improvement in their health and performance.

Some of the evident improvement includes:

  • better endurance
  • fewer sports-related injuries
  • improved range of motion
  • increased blood flow
  • increased flexibility
  • Induces faster healing

Abnormal alignment of nerves or muscles in the body may slow down the healing process. When injured, the body tries to protect itself from additional damage that may occur. Many cases evidently supported that chiropractic treatment can help ease inflammation and muscle spasm, which helps speed up the recovery process. It has known positive effects on the following:

  • Headaches
  • Hip, knee, ankle and foot sprains
  • Neck, mid-back and lower back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Shoulder pain
  • Shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand sprains
  • Tennis and golfer’s elbow

It acts as a pain reliever

It is evident in various types of research that chiropractic treatment has beneficial effects on athletes. Athletes often suffer injuries that restrict their flexibility. When compressed, nerves may cause an abnormal amount of stress and strain on the tissues, resulting in painful sensations. In a recent study reviewing the effectiveness of spinal adjustments, it concluded that chiropractic treatment helps restore mobility back to its designed movement patterns. It also triggers faster healing and less discomfort to the athletes both for short-term and long-term effects.

A universally accepted as a safe and drug-free alternative treatment

Treatments for pain medication commonly involve prescription drugs. Some of these drugs have side effects which are a serious problem that can be life-threatening. What’s worse than having a physical injury is developing a drug addiction. Unlike other treatment, Chiropractic treatment does not use any pain reliever medications. By using manual manipulation of the spine and nervous system, it solely depends on spinal adjustments so that the body heals naturally.

With proper diet, regular exercise, and correct posture, chiropractic treatment can help the injured athlete get better, and be active again.

Helps athletes achieve their optimal performance

Chiropractic concentrates on the motion of the spine enhancing the function of the nervous system. Correct spinal position and motion can lead to improved bodily function. A Canadian research team included chiropractic treatment in the rehabilitation program of their athletes. Among injured females, 16 are long-distance runners. Although there may be other contributing factors, they recovered quickly, in fact, nine of them actually scored “personal best” performances while under chiropractic treatment, although there may be other contributing factors.

According to the Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association, there is a 6.12% improvement in athletes who undergo 12-week chiropractic care treatment.

Chiropractic is becoming a popular treatment alternative for neurological and skeletal conditions. It involves non-invasive and hands-on procedures to help relieve you of pain, numbness or strain and tension in soft tissue, joints, and bones. Chiropractic is actually a recognized form of alternative medicine that is regulated by law. Chiropractors will undergo a minimum number of years studying the medical science that is chiropractic. Afterward, they can receive a license to operate and practice their profession. Here are the educational requirements that every River of Life chiropractor had to go through:

River of Life Chiropractor Educational Qualifications

A typical chiropractor’s education will involve four years of professional study or as others may call it, post-graduate education. However, before venturing into the professional study, there is a minimum number of years you need to have undertaken. You will need to have undergone four years of undergraduate study in a related course. In America for instance, there is a regulation of the colleges you can attend for your professional study. These colleges have to be approved by the Council for Chiropractic Education. The CCE has 18 institutions in the country where chiropractic education is offered.

What Do Chiropractors Learn in School?

The National Board just like other medical profession regulates chiropractic education and evaluation. The four years that a chiropractor will spend on their post graduate course is divided into four major parts.

  • Part 1 – This will take two years and has a lot of introduction courses. Basic sciences are taught in this period. Completion of part 1 will require you to take some board examinations and pass to complete National Boards part 1.
  • Part 2- This will also take two years and is more involved with clinical sciences. After studying part 2 to completion, a National Boards part 2 is required to complete the course.
  • Part 3 – More focused on physiological therapy and is important for chiropractors that want to venture in deep tissue massage and such. This is the third part of the National Boards education program.
  • Part 4 – This is the practical part of the National Boards chiropractic education. In the fourth part of chiropractic training, MRI imaging and x-ray imaging are also taught.

Internship

Internship will take one year and is compulsory for chiropractors. However, before going on internship, you should have completed the National Boards exam. There are also other educational programs that can add value to the education of your River of Life chiropractor.

Post-Graduate Requirements

Many chiropractic colleges offer professional study. Postgraduate courses will take between 1-3 years and can be taken part time or on weekends. The course work involves more than 300 hours of actual chiropractic practice and you have to be in active service for at least five years. The examination will involve an oral and written exam. Examples of postgraduate programs are orthopedics, sports medicine, nutrition, radiology, rehabilitation, neurology, and pediatrics. The chiropractor can choose to take any of these courses and after successful completion; they will be licensed and allowed to practice what they have learned. Please note: It is better to hire a chiropractor who has a postgraduate diploma due to the academic advantage over another, less qualified River of Life chiropractor.

As you can see, going to college to be a chiropractor is no walk in the park. Lots of long hard hours are spent learning how to help patients in the safest way possible.

Spinal adjustments and neck adjustments may correct abnormalities in the spinal column and offer relief from headaches. However, before the chiropractor does this, they will carry out a physical examination to determine whether the cause of a headache is a subluxation in the spine. Accurate diagnosis is important before staring any chiropractic procedure. Do you need a chiropractic diagnosis in Traverse City?

Stop Suffering From Back Pain in Traverse City…Try Chiropractic

In the United States, more than 7 million people visit a chiropractor annually with back pain complications. This is more than a third of all chiropractic treatments administered in the country. With such high numbers, it is obvious that back pain is a serious neurological condition. Statistics shows that more than half of the population will experience back pain at least once in their lives. This can be caused by a host of reasons such as sports injuries, bad posture, stress, muscle tension or strain and also car accidents. If you are suffering from back pain in Traverse City, you should consider treatment from a chiropractor.

Chiropractic and Back Pain in Traverse City

As stated earlier, many chiropractic patients are suffering from back pain. In the same light, more people are opting to try out chiropractic care for both acute and chronic back pain. Chiropractic is all about the spine because nerve transmissions are relayed to and from the spine. A misalignment or abnormality in the spinal column could bring complications such as muscle strain or back pain. A chiropractor can align the spine using special techniques to help provide relief. This would be in lieu of any surgery or medication.

How Does a Chiropractor Treat Back Pain?

When you walk into a chiropractor’s office for back pain in Traverse City, there is a procedure to be followed. You will be asked to fill out some forms with information such as family medical history, previous injuries, existing medical conditions and so forth. After this, the chiropractor will carry out a physical examination and some diagnostic tests. The tests could include MRI and x-ray photographs. The chiropractor will then draft a plan for your treatment. Treatment usually involves spinal adjustments. These manual adjustments will have your chiropractor exerting measured and direct force to vertebrae on the spine. The goal is to enhance and ultimately restore joint movement that may have been caused from a car accident.

Other Chiropractic Treatments Available for Back Pain

Apart from manual manipulation, your chiropractor can also administer other techniques to provide relief. Back pain is not just a spine problem but it also affects other parts such as muscles, ligaments and cartilage, tendons and connective tissue as well. Not all these areas will be treated by manual adjustments; here are a few other options they might use…

  • The chiropractor may also administer therapeutic massage to relieve pain in soft tissue.
  • Heat and cold treatment may be another viable option for back pain relief.
  • You might be instructed to do some light exercises to increase the range of motion of your spine.
  • Some chiropractors may give you a nutritional solution to help with your back pain problem too.

Benefits of Visiting a Chiropractor

Most cases of back pain in Traverse City are not that serious. For example, acute back pain is the most common and can last up to six weeks. Chiropractic has been tested and proven to be an effective treatment option for acute back pain. Other conditions such as fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis may also be somewhat relieved through deep tissue therapeutic massage, which is administered for back pain treatment. There has been a hot debate about whether chiropractic is effective for chronic pain treatment. Statistics shows that for chronic back pain, the effectiveness is similar to medication but without the side effects that medication can cause.

The reason behind this is the amazing healing properties of chiropractic. Particularly because many people suffer from neurological diseases such as back pain, soft tissue complications, headaches and muscle stiffness. However, there are other people that can benefit from chiropractic care including athletes, office workers, construction workers, manual laborers and also drivers of vehicles and machinery. Occupational hazards can also cause injuries and complications, which can be treated through chiropractic. Here are other complications that can be solved through chiropractic…

Top 4 Reasons People Visit a Chiropractor in Traverse City

Whiplash and Auto Accident Injuries

Injuries from auto accidents are never a good thing. They are painful and have the potential to become long-term complications. A lot of people involved in auto accidents complain of pain and discomfort much later. This can be from injuries such as whiplash, stretched ligaments and also sprained joints. Common complications after an auto accident are neck pain, migraines and back pain. With accidents, the pain can move to other areas of the body. Chiropractic may help solve this by the examining the whole spine and getting to the root cause.

Back Pain

Pain in the lower or mid back is the second most popular neurological complication. It usually emanates from the spinal column when it is under stress. The muscles around the area can even stiffen and you experience a lot of pain. Such tension can be caused by bad posture. Bad posture while seated or standing can cause significant back complications. In addition, trauma from an auto accident can also cause back pain. The chiropractic treatment for back pain is spinal manipulation where a chiropractor will apply force on your vertebra and relieve tension that may help to ease up sprained discs in between your spinal bones.

Athletic Injuries

Chiropractor can administer treatment to the joints and spine to treat sports injuries. It is common to find world famous professional athletes and sports icons visiting the chiropractor in Traverse City. Many injuries can occur in sports that need attention. A sprained ankle, wrist pain or even tennis elbow complications have been known to respond well to chiropractic treatments.

Headaches and Migraines

Contrary to popular belief, headaches can be treated by a chiropractor. This is because most headaches, particularly the ones that are recurrent, emanate from the neck region. The tension in the neck can cause a disruption in the neural system, which can then manifest itself in the form of a headache. Modern medicine uses chemicals to act on the point where the pain is coming from and not the root cause. A neck adjustment has the potential to correct headaches and migraines. Of course, you should make sure you have a highly qualified chiropractor in Traverse City to perform neck adjustments on you.
